うがつ【穿つ】

1 〔掘る〕 dig; excavate; drill; bore; 〔貫く〕 cut through…; pierce.

●壁に穴をうがつ make [bore, drill] a hole in the wall

・トンネルをうがつ excavate [bore, drill, cut] a tunnel.

2 〔妙所･真相などを言い当てる〕 hit the mark; get to the heart [root] of 《a matter》.

●うがった言葉 a happy expression; a witty [an apt, a shrewd, a perceptive] remark; a witticism

・真をうがつ hit the nail (right) on the head; hit the mark
